qaSignature’s secret solution to keep your company out of BUG-JAIL!

In today’s newsletter you will learn how to help your company avoid legal problems arising from releasing software with known bugs!

I suppose you really do not care to learn today that I had a leak in the roof nor about my struggle to lose 10 pounds before the skiing season? Don’t you?

So let’s get right to business!

I am not going to tell you how many bugs in your bug tracking system. I also would not waste time telling you that about 70% of your development budget goes into fixing and testing bugs!

Releasing buggy software to the public with KNOWN issues could present your company with legal problems. Do not take my word for it. Just Google for "software bugs" and all of a sudden words such as “legal trouble to the distributor” will start appearing more often than you’d like. We just need a few good cases to go through the Supreme Court to see the breed of new lawyers to show up!

Here is how qaSignature came up with a solution to protect your company from the bug police. If no lawyers are after you yet, at least save time and try to really improve the quality of your software.

About 18 months ago one of our clients came to us and asked how much of regression testing we perform daily on every new build. It was about 19 hours of daily regression run at the time. (At the present moment I cannot release the name of the client as we are working on joint press release.) The next question was: “How many bugs are we regressing daily automatically?” The answer was NONE! As an automation team we have never received such a request before. But it sounded like great idea and we decided to build a separate suite that would only automate the regression of the most critical bugs. 18 months later the results are really astounding!

Today we have a separate suite that regresses 500 critical bugs daily! The run takes 18 hours, which happens in parallel with the usual functional test (40 hours).

Guess what? This exercise proved itself very useful right away, as it polices the application and catches the "return" of the bugs.

So here are three easy steps to help your company stay away from legal troubles:

  1. Automate at least 10 new bugs weekly
  2. Run your bug regression suite against the daily build
  3. Update your regression suite with testing of critical bugs.

Good luck and let me know how that new suite is working for you!
