Are You Going Mad During Release?

In this month's newsletter we will talk about how to avoid going crazy during the release time.

My three year old son’s favorite game is building tall block pyramids. I was watching him a couple of days ago and after few minutes noticed the pattern. He would start with one bottom block and proceed carefully, putting one block on the top of another. Danny would successfully stack up to 7- 8 blocks, but when he got to number 9, no matter how hard he tried the entire pyramid would fall apart and he would have to start over again.

Having an engineering degree and some experience with building blocks, it did not take me long to figure out that he is missing a good base. I put 4 blocks as a base to his next project. To Danny’s amazement, and my engineering delight, his next project took all 16 or so blocks and the pyramid would have taken more if we didn’t run out of blocks.

Lots of software development organizations have wonderful individual blocks of manual test cases, but no matter how hard they try to stack them up and, how many "hands on deck" they have, at crunch time it is never "enough time". Things just fall out of place at the most inappropriate moment, consequently major defects are getting out to the key clients, and sooner or later this model begins affecting the bottom line.

If an appropriate methodology is used, automation testing serves as an excellent foundation for all the software development. No matter how complex the product gets over the years, no blocks are left out, consequently taking uncertainty and "putting out fires" mode out of the development organization. Sanity and Regression testing is done within 24 hours.

Having automation in place gives you peace of mind, even during the "crunch" mode of the release!

Looking forward to your comments.
