A Story How I Was Trying To Buy A Christmas Tree On December 25

In this letter we will talk about how to help your company to avoid being a stranger in the land of automation testing.

As you probably remember, my family came to the States about 12 years ago from Russia. The biggest holiday for Russian people is the New Year’s night. This is a time when families and friends get together, exchange presents, and have a “little” to drink. This is also a night when Grandfather Frost goes around, putting presents under the trees. The next morning all the kids get up really early and run to the tree to see what “Ded Moroz” (Russian for Grandfather Frost or Santa Claus, if you insist) brought them for being good the whole year. Basically, New Year does not come without the tree.

The first year in the country we decided to keep the tradition and gather friends and family around the tree. In the early December on my way to work I noticed a lot next to the Burlington Mall that was selling trees. I have being working really late on December 24 and the next day 25 was a day off. (Big surprise for me!) So Julia and I put little George in the car and went to buy a tree a bit earlier than we were accustomed to. The big day of getting a tree was Dec.30 for us back at home.

It was unusually quiet when we drove up to the lot on Middlesex Turnpike. That did not ring a bell. There were lots of trees lying around the lot, so we parked the car and started looking for a tree. To my big surprise there was no attendant. We decided to wait a bit for a sales person who “must have just run out to get a cup of coffee”. To make a long story longer, an hour later I realized that no one would ever show up there.

We did get a tree (at no charge that time) and drove home. But the joy of mingling with a crowd of other tree shoppers was not there. And let me tell you, it did feel pretty strange. We could have avoided the situation if we did not assume that Santa Claus AKA Father Frost AKA Ded Moroz visited everybody on December 31! Well, how silly to assume that he can make it around the world in one night! Super powers or not! I guess, we should have asked...

I am happy to report that after that year and bunch of laughs from our friends we do our tree shopping really earlier.

Same goes to automation implementation. Do you feel like sitting and hoping that one day it will miraculously be done, and taking a chance that it would never show up like that tree salesman? Or, maybe, it is worth asking someone who’s done it few times to spare yourself the disappointment? Let me know what you think.

I wish you a very Happy New Year and successful Automation Testing Implementation!

You have to excuse me now; I have to rush home to put that vodka in the freezer. After all it is still my favorite holiday.
